Mary Poppins Literary Competition 2026

The world’s most magical nanny, Mary Poppins, turns 100 this year. To celebrate, hop into your time machine and let your imagination run wild.

Be inspired by this year’s theme Timeless Travellers. Step back into 1926 or leap forward into the next century — the adventure is yours to create.

We’re looking for original short stories or poems that brim with mystery, fun and magic.

Interpret the theme however you wish.

Competition rules and requirements:

The competition is open to students living and/or attending school on the Fraser Coast

One entry per person per category

Story or poem must be the author’s original work

Entries must reflect the theme

Short stories should be well-structured

Entries should be checked and edited for correct grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence construction

Follow the word or line limit

Submit a word doc or if handwritten, scan and supply as pdf

Final copy must include a title, paragraphs – space between or indented first line – and be neatly handwritten or typed.

2. Please do not write your name on your literary work. The deadline for entry is Monday August 31, 2026.

3. All prizes will be awarded at the discretion of the judges and their decision is final.

4. Winners will be announced at the Mary Poppins Literary Celebration at Maryborough City Hall on Saturday October 17, 2026, at 10.30am.

5. Everyone who enters the competition is invited to attend.

This competition is run by Mary Inc. and celebrates Mary Poppins’ author, Pamela L. Travers, who was born in what is now Maryborough’s Story Bank.
