Heritage and Humour: The Inspector of Nuisances

Stroll down Kent Street, and you’ll uncover one of Maryborough’s many entertaining nods to history – the Inspector of Nuisances installation. An intriguing couple of bronze pigs sit cheekily beside a goat on an information platform, marking the site of a major fire and commemorating a lively chapter in the city’s past.

In the 19th century, the ‘Inspector of Nuisances’ was the council’s unsung hero, tasked with reining in wayward pigs, goats, dogs and even unruly shopkeepers. Back then, livestock wandering into town caused all sorts of havoc—from public safety risks to hygiene nightmares. The Inspector was essentially the town’s early version of animal control, keeping the streets safe and somewhat tidy.
