Who do you think you are? Discover your family’s hidden stories at the Maryborough Heritage Centre where history and ancestry converge to share the experiences of those who dared to dream of a better life.
At ground level in the heritage-listed bank building in Wharf Street is Treeroots, the Maryborough Family Heritage Institute, a treasure trove offers a glimpse into the lives of more than 22,000 immigrants who arrived via the Mary River, carrying hopes, hardships, and resilience.
More than 50 books written in Maryborough tell the stories of Individual families and the history of the immigrant ships, detailing the voyages complete with passenger lists.
Letters and diaries from the 19th Century give an insight into the tribulations and joys experienced by early immigrants, piecing together personal connections to the past.
Carefully preserved books, artefacts, and archives don’t just list names—they tell tales of daunting sea voyages, the strength it took to endure them, and the sheer determination to carve out a home in unfamiliar territory. For many, the Mary River wasn’t just a gateway to Queensland; it was the beginning of a lifetime of ambition and struggle, shaping the future of the Fraser Coast, the colony and the start of a new life in an ancient land.

Upstairs is the Maryborough Family History Society which has another treasure trove of family and district with help on hand. It is also open three mornings a week, Tuesday to Thursday, 8.30am to 1.30pm, and organises the excellent monthly night tours of the cemetery.
